Psychological Assessments and Diagnosis in Singapore

(Comprehensive, evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults)

A psychological assessment is more than a collection of tests — it’s an exploration of how a person learns, feels, relates, and functions in the world. At Sol Therapy, we see every assessment as a collaborative journey toward understanding — one that honours the individual’s story, context, and nervous system, not just their symptoms.

Our assessments are conducted by registered Psychologists and supported by our Clinical Lead of Client Care Triage, who ensure that each step of the process feels guided, transparent, and safe. Whether you’re seeking diagnostic clarity, educational accommodations, or direction for therapy, we hold this process with deep respect and care.

What Is a Psychological Assessment?

A psychological assessment is a structured, evidence-based evaluation that helps us understand the cognitive, emotional, and behavioural aspects of an individual’s experience.

It provides insight into areas such as learning, focus, mood regulation, and social functioning — helping to clarify what’s happening beneath the surface and guide next steps for support.

Psychological Assessments can be useful for:
  • Children facing learning, behavioural, or social-emotional challenges
  • Adolescents navigating focus, emotional regulation, or academic struggles
  • Adults seeking clarity on patterns affecting work, study, relationships and treatment or diagnostic purposes

Common reasons for Psychological Assessments in Singapore include:
  • ADHD and attention-related concerns
  • Autism Spectrum traits and developmental differences
  • Specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia
  • Cognitive, IQ, and gifted assessments
  • Emotional, behavioural, or mood concerns
  • School placement, exam accommodations, or SPED applications
  • Workplace or tertiary education accessibility and insurance claims
  • Diagnostic assessments for medications

The Importance of Psychological Assessment

Our psychological assessments in Singapore are crucial in understanding and addressing mental health concerns in both adults and children. These evaluations involve the systematic collection and analysis of information to understand an individual’s cognitive, emotional, social, and behavioural functioning.

While this service is often associated with children and adolescents, psychological assessments are equally important for adults. Many conditions — such as ADHD, learning differences, anxiety, and emotional regulation difficulties — can go undiagnosed until later in life. Assessment provides the opportunity to recognise these patterns, name them accurately, and take steps toward change.

Each assessment typically combines clinical interviews, standardised tests, self-report measures, and behavioural observations. Together, these tools allow our psychologists to identify the nature and severity of symptoms, leading to an accurate diagnosis and a tailored treatment plan.

Early detection and intervention are key to effective mental health support. By promoting awareness, reducing stigma, and encouraging timely evaluation, we can ensure that both children and adults receive the guidance and resources they need to thrive.

Our Psychological Assessment Process

We know that reaching out for an assessment often follows months or even years of uncertainty. Our process is designed to reduce overwhelm — guiding you clearly from the first inquiry to post-assessment support.

Step 1: Triage & Initial Inquiry

Your journey begins with our Clinical Lead of Client Care Triage, your first point of contact at Sol Therapy. During this stage, our triage lead listens to your concerns, gathers relevant background information, and helps determine the most appropriate next step — whether that’s a screening session or a full psychological assessment.

This step also clarifies practical details such as purpose (e.g., diagnostic clarification, school support, workplace documentation), timeline or report deadlines, and relevant expectations before scheduling with a psychologist.

Step 2: Screening Session (Optional)

The screening session is a short, focused meeting with one of our psychologists to explore the presenting concerns, review history, and determine whether a comprehensive assessment is warranted. For many parents and adults, this step helps bring initial clarity and reassurance before committing to a full evaluation. If clear indicators are present, the psychologist will discuss moving forward with a full psychological assessment.

Step 3: Full Psychological Assessments

Once confirmed, the psychologist conducts a thorough evaluation tailored to the purpose of the referral. This may include:

  • Clinical Interviews to explore developmental, medical, and psychosocial background
  • Standardised Psychological Tests to measure areas like cognition, attention, learning, emotion, and behaviour
  • Behavioural Observations during testing sessions
  • Collateral Information from teachers, parents, close friends or partners for a more complete picture

Testing is usually spread across one or two sessions, depending on the individual’s stamina and scope of assessment.

Step 4: Integration and  Differential Diagnosis

All findings are reviewed and integrated holistically. The psychologist examines how test data, observed behaviour, and lived context interact — ensuring the interpretation goes beyond scores or labels. Other conditions such as trauma, anxiety, depression, or sensory sensitivities are considered to ensure an accurate and compassionate understanding of what’s truly happening.

Step 5: Feedback & Recommendations

After analysis, the psychologist prepares a comprehensive written report (typically 20–30 pages) that includes:

  • Diagnostic formulation (if applicable)
  • Key findings and interpretation
  • Strengths and areas for growth
  • Tailored recommendations for therapy, education, or workplace support

A feedback session is then held to go through results together in plain language, allowing space for reflection and emotional processing. The goal is to ensure you leave with clarity — not just about “what the results mean,” but how they can inform meaningful next steps.

Step 6: Continued Support

Following the assessment, our psychologists and triage team continue to support you through integration and care planning. Some clients choose to continue therapy or coaching, while others may pursue accommodations or medical referrals. We help you bridge these next steps so that understanding leads to transformation, not just information.

Types of Psychological Assessments Offered

At Sol Therapy, each assessment is tailored — not formulaic. We combine validated psychometric tools with relational, trauma-informed engagement to ensure the process feels human, not mechanical.

Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity-Disorder (ADHD) Assessment

Our ADHD assessments explore attentional levels or focus, impulse control, organisation, and executive functioning. We use interviews, validated rating scales (from individuals, parents, or teachers), and performance-based attention measures. Beyond diagnosis, we work with you to understand how attention patterns affect daily life and emotional well-being, and what supportive strategies can help.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Assessment

An ASD assessment helps clarify differences in social communication, sensory processing, and behavioural patterns. The process involves developmental history, observational tools, and structured interviews. We hold these sessions with care, recognising the importance of safety, dignity, and pacing — especially for children and individuals who may feel overwhelmed in testing environments.

Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) Assessment

SLD assessments identify conditions like dyslexia (reading), dysgraphia (writing), or dyscalculia (math). These help uncover why a capable learner may still struggle academically, supporting access to learning accommodations and targeted interventions.

Cognitive or IQ Assessment

Cognitive assessments measure intellectual ability, problem-solving, processing speed, and reasoning. They may be used for gifted or academic placement, special needs placement, intellectual disability assessment, clarification, or to understand overall learning potential.

Psycho-Educational Assessment

This combined approach evaluates both cognitive and academic performance to provide a full picture of how an individual learns best. It helps guide Individualised Education Plans (IEPs) and exam accommodations.

Developmental or Global Delay Assessment

For younger children (typically age five and above), developmental assessments identify early challenges in language, motor skills, attention, and adaptive functioning. Early understanding can support intervention planning during crucial growth years.

Adult Psychological Assessment

Our adult assessments explore emotional regulation, stress, burnout, trauma, and cognitive functioning. They can assist with workplace accommodations, tertiary education support, or diagnostic clarification (e.g., adult ADHD, PTSD). Each process is collaborative, strengths-based, and paced according to comfort.

Our Approach

We believe that understanding the mind is not about categorising people — it’s about meeting them where they are. At Sol Therapy, our assessments are relational, trauma-informed, and integrative. We value the humanity behind the data, the context behind the symptoms, and the nervous system behind the behaviour.

Every report we write and every conversation we hold is guided by one intention: to support awareness that leads to self-agency, not shame. To us, an assessment is not an end — it’s a beginning.

Frequently Asked Questions

You may consider a psychological assessment if you or your child experiences ongoing challenges with focus, learning, mood regulation, memory, or daily functioning despite adequate effort or support. Assessments are especially helpful when difficulties persist across different settings — such as home, school, or work — and you wish to better understand the underlying causes.

A screening is a brief session designed to identify whether a full psychological assessment is recommended. It provides preliminary insight and guidance but does not include formal testing or a written report.  The fee structure remains unchanged when opting to upgrade from a screening session to a full assessment. A full assessment involves standardised psychological testing, in-depth interviews, behavioural observations, and a comprehensive report with diagnostic impressions and tailored recommendations.

We provide assessments for a range of concerns, including:

  • Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Specific Learning Disorders (Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia)
  • Cognitive / IQ and Giftedness evaluations
  • Emotional, behavioural, and developmental challenges
  • Academic placement or exam accommodations
  • Adult diagnostic clarification and workplace support

The process typically includes:

  • An initial triage consultation with our Clinical Lead of Client Care Triage
  • One or more sessions with a Psychologist for interviews and testing
  • Questionnaires for parents, teachers, or partners (where relevant)
  • A written report detailing findings, diagnosis (if applicable), and recommendations
  • A feedback session to review the results and next steps together

From the first contact to the delivery of the final report, the process typically spans three to four weeks, depending on scheduling and report complexity. Testing itself usually takes four to seven hours, completed across one or two days.

Yes. All information shared and reports produced are treated with strict confidentiality. Reports are only released to third parties (such as schools or employers) with your written consent.

Coverage varies depending on your insurance provider, corporate coverage (EAP), and plan. Our team can issue an itemised invoice to support claim submissions. We recommend checking directly with your insurer regarding coverage for psychological testing or clinical assessments.

Certain parts of the process, such as the intake or feedback session, may be conducted online. However, standardised testing must be completed in person to maintain validity and reliability of results.

Yes. Our psychologists provide reports suitable for submission to the Ministry of Education (MOE) schools, universities, polytechnics, or employers to support exam access arrangements or workplace accommodations. Please inform our triage team of these requirements at the start so your assessment can be tailored accordingly.

Yes. Reports include practical, tailored recommendations such as classroom or exam accommodations, therapy options, or referrals for medical review if appropriate. We ensure the findings are translated into clear next steps for support at home, school, or work.

After the report is shared and discussed, many clients continue with therapy, coaching, or educational support based on the recommendations. Our team can coordinate follow-up care within Sol Therapy or collaborate with external professionals to ensure consistent, well-integrated, and all-rounded support.

Where medical input may be helpful — such as psychiatric review or medication support — our team can assist in bridging that care thoughtfully, ensuring that it complements ongoing therapeutic work rather than replaces it. We collaborate closely with trusted healthcare and allied professionals so that every layer of support remains integrated, person-centred, and consistent with each client’s broader healing process.

Yes. We provide assessments for children (5 years and above), adolescents, and adults. Each process is adapted to suit the individual’s age, needs, and goals.
